What Is the GPSR Again?
The GPSR (Regulation (EU) 2023/988) applies since 13 December 2024. It repeals Directive 2001/95/EC (the former General Product Safety Directive) and Directive 87/357/EEC. The Regulation covers a wide range of products placed on the EU market, with a limited set of exceptions (such as medicinal products, food and antiques), and explicitly extends to online marketplaces and the sellers active on them.
For many consumer products — depending on your product — the GPSR imposes requirements on economic operators, such as a responsible contact point established in the EU and correct product information. Whether and how those requirements apply to your specific product differs per product category. Check this per product.
Why Marketplace Sellers Run Into This
If you sell through an online marketplace, complying with product regulation remains your responsibility — the exact obligations depend on your role as importer, manufacturer or distributor. Marketplaces now request GPSR data themselves and can delist offers, but that does not take over your own obligations.
At the same time, the regulation is hard to navigate without a legal background: which rules belong to which product, and where do you start? Many sellers are not even sure whether their product falls under the GPSR, let alone which additional regulations may play a role.
What the Import8 GPSR Check Does
The tool lives at import8.nl/tools/gpsr-check and works from your HS code (your product's customs code) plus, optionally, the country of origin. Based on that, the tool looks up which regulations — including the GPSR and related regimes — are linked to that HS code. It is a direct database lookup, not AI and not a risk assessment of your product: the check tells you which rules are linked to your HS code, not whether your product is safe or what risk it carries.

If you do not know your HS code, there is a second option: a variant based on a product description or photo. This runs through your Import8 account and costs 1 credit per check, because a classification is performed first to determine the HS code before the GPSR check can run. Is the GPSR Check outcome legally binding?
No. The GPSR Check gives an indicative estimate based on your HS code and does not constitute a legal determination. Always verify the outcome for your specific product and situation, if needed with a compliance specialist.
Does Import8 provide the Responsible Person service?
No. Import8 does not act as Responsible Person or in any other legal role and does not take over this responsibility. The GPSR Check only shows whether a Responsible Person may be required — appointing one remains the responsibility of the importer or manufacturer.
What is the difference with the Sanity Check?
The Sanity Check validates whether your HS code is correct. The GPSR Check goes a step further: given a (presumably correct) HS code, which product safety rules — GPSR and sector directives such as Toy Safety, EMC, RED, or Machinery — may apply.
