What is the GPSR?
The GPSR (Regulation (EU) 2023/988) applies since 13 December 2024. It replaces Directive 2001/95/EC (the old General Product Safety Directive) and Directive 87/357/EEC. It covers most products placed on the EU market, with a few exceptions such as medicines, food and antiques. It also applies to online marketplaces and the sellers on them.
For many consumer products the GPSR sets requirements for the businesses in the chain, such as a responsible contact point in the EU and correct product information. Whether and how that applies to your product differs per product group. So check it per product.
Why marketplace sellers have to deal with this
If you sell through a marketplace, you remain responsible for your product meeting the rules. What exactly you must do depends on your role: importer, manufacturer or distributor. Marketplaces now ask for GPSR data themselves and can remove your listing, but that does not take over your obligations.
The rules are hard to follow without a legal background: which rules belong to which product, and where do you start? Many sellers are not sure whether their product falls under the GPSR, let alone which other rules apply.
What the Import8 GPSR check does
The check is at import8.nl/tools/gpsr-check. You enter your HS code (the customs code of your product) and, if you like, the country of origin. The check then looks up which rules, including the GPSR, are linked to that HS code. It is a lookup in our database, not AI and not an assessment of your product. You see which rules belong to your HS code, not whether your product is safe.

What the check is not
The GPSR check shows which rules in our database belong to your HS code. It is an indication: not legal advice, not a conformity assessment and no guarantee that your product meets the rules. The result can be incomplete or wrong for your product. Import8 (Trade8 B.V.) is not a responsible person or authorised representative. The responsibility stays with you as importer, manufacturer or distributor. If you are unsure, ask a specialist or lawyer.

Is the GPSR Check outcome legally binding?
No. The GPSR Check gives an indicative estimate based on your HS code and does not constitute a legal determination. Always verify the outcome for your specific product and situation, if needed with a compliance specialist.
Does Import8 provide the Responsible Person service?
No. Import8 does not act as Responsible Person or in any other legal role and does not take over this responsibility. The GPSR Check only shows whether a Responsible Person may be required, appointing one remains the responsibility of the importer or manufacturer.
What is the difference with the Sanity Check?
The Sanity Check validates whether your HS code is correct. The GPSR Check goes a step further: given a (presumably correct) HS code, which product safety rules (GPSR and sector directives such as Toy Safety, EMC, RED, or Machinery) may apply.
